Cancun, 1997

Aug. 9, Saturday

Got up at 3AM, on the road to DC at 4, arrived National at 6. Left for Raleigh at 7:55, then KK couldn’t get on the plane – no DL. Caramba. Midway flew us back to DC, at 3PM, arrived about 5, home in RIC at 7:30.

Retrieved DL, drove back to DC, stayed right at Airport Econo Lodge. Kida arrived Cancun ok, found Cancun Plaza.

Sunday

Got up at 5, try #2. Arrived Cancun at 122:30pm, found Linda at 1:30. Bus to hotel zone, cost $9. Plus, they dropped us off at the wroing hotel. Finally reached hotel at 4:30, CST.

Ate at La Parrillo, downtown. Great food, atmosphere, total cost for 6 people (KK, me, Linda, Jeff, Tanya, Terry), $80 US.

Monday

Breakfast at Iguana Wana, $45 mex. Excellent food. Nice mall, Caracol. Spent the day in the mall. Piano player on 2nd floor, played Windmills of Your Mind for us. Found 2 galleries featuring Sergio Bustamante.

Dinner at Mr. Poppa’s. Great dinner special lobster tail (2), shrimp and mexican combo for $24.95 US. Great waiter interaction. Total bill for 6 people, $170 US.

Swam in ocean til 1am.

Tuesday

Xcaret all day, $48 US/person. Great value-beaches, snorkeling, undrground river on own, small zoo, aquarium, sea turtles, dolphins, and excellent evening show. Mayan religious ceremonies, complete with drums, incense, ceremonial boats, etc. Show ended at 9pm. For the afternoon, we found an isolated area on the water with waiter service. Food was high-2 cheseburgers, 2 hot dogs with fries, and beer was about $32 US.

Wednesday

Breakfast at Iguana Wana, went to flea market, Coral Negro on Kukulcan.

Dinner at Los Rancheros, Flamingo Mall. Great food, waiter interaction. Marimba line, limbo contest. Total bill for 6, $130 US. Got mariachis to sing Grenada.

Thursday

Ate breakfast in hotel. Linda left, forgot keys, so I took taxi to get keys to her. Turned out it was a second set. But, discovered driver would take us to coba for $120 US.

Did it. Main pyramid is 12 stories high, which we climbed. It’s not as well preserved or excavated as Chichen Itza.

Smaller pyramids near entrance were the most interesting. Price of taxi was probably equivalent to renting a car $83, and gas, especially since we couldn’t fine one.

Dinner at Perico’s, good entertainment value, bit food & service was subpar. Bill for 3 was $75 US. Marimba line, shooters, etc. Scenery alone was worth the visit – great life size skeleton figures in various scenes, like poker game, taking a bath, etc. Bar stools have saddles mounted on them. Men’s urinals had peeled limes laid out, later filled w/ice on top of that.

Friday

Breakfast in hotel – eggs, bacon, and toast $42 Mex.

Searched for Markie’s condo, on Pok Ta Pok Ave. Lagoon side, long walk to Kukulcan Blvd.

Browsed Kukulcan Plaza. Very American style, huge, food court has Pasta Factory, Oscar’s Seafood,  My Konos (gyros), Dunkin Donuts, Old Stadium Hot Dogs, Taco Inn, Burger King, Mrs Fields, Subway, Baskin Robbins. Disgusting. Whopper is $20.90 Mex, TCBY also (yogurt).
