Lucifer’s Tears (An Inspector Vaara Novel) by James Thompson

Strong successor to Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. Oops, wait a minute…  it’s a different author. Ah, that’s because the book takes place in Finland and Thompson ‘s writing is a lot like the style of Stieg Larsson. Oh yeah, and there’s plenty of similarities in sex, violence, and revenge. I really enjoyed it and will be reading more of his books. Definitely tattoo-worthy.

Amped, by Daniel Wilson

This is the sequel to Robopocalypse–a continuing story of man’s  technology rising up against him. Her, whatever. It’s not exactly a  sequel, as it has no relation to Robopocalypse, except for the theme of mankind letting its creations go out of control. This is about a  technology that enables electronic chips being implanted in people’s heads that  assists, or amplifies, the brain and nervous system….

Robopocolypse, by Daniel Wilson

Each chapter of this book reads like a short story, even though they’re all related to the central story, about a worldwide uprising of robots. It obviously takes place in the future, and has a resemblance to the Terminator movies. The robots here though, instead of being built for human extermination, are normal household robots. They have superior strength and intelligence though, so they’re quite capable of getting the…

John Carter (movie review)

I wanted to like this movie. And I did. Maybe it helped to watch the original version, which was really a stinker. Anyway, I’ve been a Tarzan and John Carter fan ever since high school. Edgar Rice never got the respect he deserves–he’s well known for his Tarzan books, but I never saw any love for JC. Well, he makes a grand entrance here, and…

Prometheus (movie review)

It’s a stand alone movie, even though it helps to have seen the Alien series first. Full of suspense and cliffhangers–and if it doesn’t scare the crap out of you, you might be an alien. The story is a search for the Engineers, creators of the first humans. Well, of course, they find one, you already figured that out, didn’t you? But the horrors they…

11/22/63, by Stephen King

Another winner by The King. Although it’s not hard to figure out that changing history can lead to some “interesting” results, Stephen King manages to throw in enough plot twists and cliffhangers that he makes the reading become an extremely fun trip back to 1958. And I’ll be darned if King didn’t manage to sneak in a pretty nice love story. It’s the first time…

American Samuri, by Steve Hendry

Great action. If you like Vince Flynn (and Mitch Rapp), you’ll like this book. It starts off with a 13 year old boy fighting several British commandos in the boy’s dojo. Brutal–but you won’t be putting the book down for the next few pages. Some words that describe the book would be: violent, bloody, exciting, and suspenseful. The hero, Steve, is a cross between Mitch…

Hidden Shadows, by Maryann Paige

Surprisingly good, considering I had never heard of the author. But, I’m a sucker for horror, and this was right up my alley. It has all the right elements–fear, monsters, blood, violence, insanity, and the all-important “yes, I care what happens to the characters.” I paid $6.00 for it, but I’ve seen it on other sites for $3. I bought it in epub format, which…

The Rule of Nine–book review

By Steve Martini–This story was just full of twists, and has two really, really evil characters. One is the mastermind, and the other is an assassin. The author hides the ultimate goal of the mastermind until close to the end of the story, and we’re at last able to figure out what the title refers to (no, I’m not telling). The hero, San Diego defense attorney…

1:30 am–No, this cab’s not going anywhere

I never envisioned the last leg of my vacation ending like this–who could have seen this coming? My plane landed at Reagan National last night at midnight, 10 minutes ahead of schedule. Home free, I thought. The Metro leg went fine, even though I’ve never traveled on it this late. Exited the White Flint station at 1 am, and I started having my first doubts…
