Recursion, by Blake Church
Another good one, by the author of Dark Matter, which I also liked. It’s about scientists figuring out how to transplant memories from one person to another. So, you could wake up one morning and have the memories of another person. And none of your actual memories. What could go wrong? One of the subjects of this process ends up committing suicide because she starts…
FantasticLand, by Mike Bockoven
FantasticLand is a giant amusement park in Florida. A huge storm hits it and knocks out all the power. Unfortunately, anyone who hasn’t left after the park’s storm warnings, is stranded because of the flooding. Which includes some of the workers. Because of the perceived shortage of food and water (there isn’t), different groups of workers organize themselves into factions, and start fighting each other….
White Lies, by Lucy Dawson
Alexandra Inglis is a well respected doctor, but while out partying one night, she has a fling with a stranger. Or, so she thought. It turns out the man, Jonathan, is under age, and she has actually treated him in her office. Obviously, she’s desperate to keep this a secret, but Jonathan is obsessive, and threatens to expose their liaisons. I listened to this as…
Memory Man, by David Baldacci
This is the first in a series of books about Amos Decker. As a result of a violent hit to this head in a football collision, he now has perfect memory. This will be his superpower, as he hunts for his wife and daughter’s killer. Several years after his family’s killing, as a police detective, he’s asked to investigate a school shooting. The killer’s profile…
A Mind of Her Own, by Paula McLain
A story about Marie Curie, the co-discoverer of x-rays. It’s more of a short story, and it only discusses her love affair with her eventual husband, Pierre. I was hoping to hear more about her life as a scientist. So, it was a disappointment.
The Lake House, by Kate Morton
Didn’t care for it. It’s two murder mysteries complicated by a horror story. And it jumps back and forth in time. That’s not necessarily a problem, but with so many characters, it was too confusing. A homicide detective takes a break from a murder case, and takes a vacation, where a mysterious house sits next to a lake. While there with family, she becomes involved…
Out of the Dark, by Gregg Hurwitz
The 4th book in the series, this one is very good, as are all the others. This time time Evan goes up against POTUS. No, it’s not Trump, because then, I’m sure the outcome would be different. In the process of defending himself, the president calls into action Orphan A–the very first orphan, and Evan’s mortal enemy.
The Accident, by Natalie Barelli
An excellent study in how evil people can be. Two friends are having a good time one night, when they realize they’ve just hit an object in the road–but it’s actually a body, and they realize they’ve killed someone. But, they’ve been drinking–they can’t call the police, can they? Without spoiling the rest of the book, I can only tell you this simple event turns…
Sometimes I Lie, by Alice Feeney
Started out great–a woman wakes wakes up from a coma, but can’t open her eyes. She can’t remember exactly what put her in the hospital, but over time, she starts to remember things. The pieces of the puzzle start to come together–a rape from an ex-boyfriend, a car accident, a friend from childhood, suspicions about her husband. And just when you think you’ve started to…
The Expanse, Book 1, by James S.A. Corey
The Andromeda Strain on steroids. One of the best syfy books I’ve ever read. It’s the story of an alien race infecting our solar system with a virus, the protomolecule, that not only kills, it consumes whole populations and creates intelligent, and most unfriendly, mutations. Set far in the future, mankind has invented the Epstein Drive, allowing incredible space craft speeds, and because of this,…
